    Appomattox
    General Robert E. Lee of the Confederation surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union. He surrendered in the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia after they fought a battle won by Grant.

    Reconstruction
    The 13th Amendment says that there may be no form of human slavery. The 14th Amendment says that no state may make any decisions that will impact the people withtout the civilians consent. The 15th Amendment gave colored men the right to vote. Jim Crow laws seperated the blacks from the white in public places(water fountains, playgrounds, etc.)

    The Industrial Revolution
    America made a giant leap forward with mechanics and connections between coasts. Andrew Carnagie created a new kind of steel. A new railroad was created from the east to west coast. Cities were growing at a rapid rate because of immigration. America's economy doubled.

    Imperialism
    Alfred Thayer Mahan wrote a book that said that whatever country had the best navy would rule the world. America got involved in the Spanish-American War. The Panama Canal was built in Central America. Hawaii was added to the U.S.A. The American Great White Fleet circumnavigated the globe. America had its own sphere of influence, a part of the world that basically "ruled", now.

    World War 1
    An American ship, the Lisutania, was sunken by German naval ships and killed 128 American civilians which increased tension between the two countries. America officially declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. The war was fought through trench warfare which brought the war to a standstill until new mechanical advancements were made. The war officially ended in the year 1919.

    Prohibition/Roaring 20's
    Girls started to fade away from the Victorian style and started to wear shirt skirts, short hairdos, and go to speakeasies. Speakeasies were secret party rooms secured by a vault door where men and women could go to do drugs, dance, and have fun. These types of girls were called flappers because of the skirts that they wore to dance and they would flap around. Women who grew up during the victorian age and were around during this time did not approve of this at all.
  • The Great Depression

    Many men bought stocks in the stock exchange and wished that they would become rich over night. The stock market crashed and many lost almost all of their money.People panicked and withdrew their money from banks which led the banks to foreclose. Workers either were laid of or went bankrupt. Then the Dust Bowl hit which had a huge impact on the agricultural economy of America.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    A naval base in Pearl HArbor, Hawaii was attcked by the Imperial Japanese Navy that led to the U.S.'s entrance to World War 2.
    Over 2,000 Americans were lost while only 65 Japanese were lost.

    World War 2
    This war sparked the atomic age where America started using atomic bombs on Japan. America went up against the axis of evil which included Japan, Germany, and Italy. The civilians in America also fought a great war because their country was going into war when they had just come out of the biggest economic collapse in history.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, went to war with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, supported by the Soviet Union. America stepped in to help the Republic of Korea by supplying 88% of their troops. The two opponents came to peace and reestablished their borders.
  • Cold War

    Cold War
    There were high tensions between America and the Soviet Union. Both wanted to get a man into space, and then land a man on the moon. The Soviet Union had a domino theory that if one state fell to communism then the rest would follow. Fidel Castro led the Cuban Missile Crisis where he held nuclear bombs in Cuba and threatened to use them on the U.S.
  • Vietnam War

    This was a civil war between North and South Korea that America stepped in to help out South Vietnam. America was trying to prevent a communist takeover of Vietnam in it's whole. America eventually withdrew from the war but the two sides came to peace the next day.
  • Gulf War

    Gulf War
    Saddam Hussain, the president of Iraq, threatened to deplete the world's oil supply. George W. Bush of America stepped in and stationed troops in Kuwait, next to Saudi Arabia. America stopped Iraq from doing this and saved the world's oil supply by winning "Operation Iraqi Freedom".

    September 11, 2001
    19 terrorists hijacked two planes and flew them directly into the Twin Towers in New York City. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon, the center for all American military forces, in Washington D.C. A fourth plane was aimed for Washington D.C. but crashed in Pennsylvania. Over 3,000 people died.
  • Operation Enduring Freedom

    Operation Enduring Freedom
    This name is the official term for the war in Afghanistan. This war is a fight against the Taliban, a terrorist group centered in Afghanistan. We currently still have troops stationed here, but there are very few and most have come home. America is almost at peace with Afghanista, but we can't risk the Taliban coming back to take over again.
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom

    Operation Iraqi Freedom
    The U.S. opposed the new military forces of Iraq and the new government there. The U.S. and the United Kingdom also believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction that threatened them. American surveys of Iraq proved that they had stopped the making of nuclear bombs and chemical weapons in 1991, so there was no point to the invasion other than to make sure.
