    Reconstruction was the process the federal government used to readmit the confederate states to the Union after the Civil War. It began on December 6, 1865, the date that the thirteenth amendment was passed. It ended with the Compromise of 1877,w hich made Rutherford B. Hayes president, but made the government remove federal troops from the South.

The goal of the construction of the Panama Canal was to make a link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through Panama. Construction ended in 1914.

    World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. One side was called the Triple Entente, which included Britain, France, Russia (Which would later withdraw from the war), the United States (Which joined in April 6th 1917), and Serbia. The Central Powers included Austria-Hungary, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria.

    The Prohibition Era was a time in American history when alcohol was illegal to buy, sell, or consume in the United States. It led to the rise of many criminal gangs and having them smuggle them in from Canada. Prohibition ended with the ratification of the 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment and the Prohibition Acts.

    The New Deal was President Roosevelt's programs to fight the Great Depression. He sent many new bills to Congress during a certain period of time and most of them were passed easily. The objectives of the bills were to get Americans relief for the hungry and jobless, recovery for agriculture and industry, and reforms to change the way the economy worked.

    World War II was one of the largest wars in world history. It began when Adolph Hitler, the German premier, invaded Poland and 2 days later Britain and France declared war on Germany. About 45-60 million people died and among them, about 9 milllion Jews. The United States became involved after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the 7th of December, 1941. The war ended on May 8, 1945 with Japan's surrender.

The United Nations (Mostly the United States) supported and fought on the side of South Korea and the Chinese fought on the side of the North after the Chinese Offensive of 1951. The war ended with a Stalemate and Armistice of both sides on the 27th of July, 1953.

    The United States entered Vietnam siding with the democratic South Vietnam. Overall, the United States sent about 536,000 combat troops to Vietnam to fight North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. The U.S. signed a peace treaty with North Vietnam on January 27, 1973 and American troops left Vietnam in March 29. However, in 1975, North Vietnam launched a massive invasion of the South, and on April 30, Saigon fell to Communist forces, and was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.

    Began when Saddam Hussein of Iraq ordered the invasion of Kuwait, a nearby and oil rich country. The United States and their allies soon drove the Iraqi militants out of the country, but not before the Iraqis lit many oil rigs on fire. The war ended February 28, 1991.

    September 11, 2001
    The largest terrorist attack on U.S. soil occured on this day. Two hijacked commercial airline planes flew into the World Trade Center buildings in New York, causing them to topple to the ground hours later with thousands of people dying at the same time. Another plane flew into the Pentagon building in Washington D.C., and a third plane that was probably supposed to hit the Capital Building or the White House crashed in Shanksville, Pennslyvania.
