  • Roosevelt's Corollary regarding Monroe Doctrine

    President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904 put the Roosevelt Corollary into effect in which it basically restated the Monroe Doctrine in that the United States would intervene in most circumstances regarding European involvement in a Western country.

    Building of Panama Canal

    Over the course of ten years, the United States worked on constructing the Panama Canal, allowing for ships to pass through saving them months of time because otherwise they would have to loop around South America to get from coast to coast of the United States.
  • Roosevelt wins Nobel Peace Prize

    After mediating the Treaty of Portsmouth between Japan and Russia ending hostilities between the two in 1906, Theodore Roosevelt was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing what could have resulted in a very unbalanced Asia.
  • Woodrow Wilson as President

    In 1912 Woodrow Wilson was elected President of the United States in which he would serve two terms. He navigated us through the Great War and guided the nation when it needed a leader through one of the most disastrous times in human history.
  • Income Tax

    In 1913, the sixteenth amendment was added to the Bill of Rights adding an income tax to each income. Today, this is a large portion of the taxes that the government receives.

    World War I

    In 1914, what was considered the "Great War" or "War to end all wars" began. It included Germany, Austria, and the Ottoman Empire against Great Britain, France, eventually the U.S. in 1917, and other smaller countries. America only joined in the latter part of the war, so casualties were relatively minor compared to what the other nations faced. On November 11, 1918, Germany surrendered and the war was officially over with the Allied nations on top; but this war would have consequences to come.
  • Bolshevik Revolution

    While Russia was fighting in WWI, many of its citizens were not pleased especially seeing the massive death counts of sometimes 500,000 per battle, so Communists with Lenin as leader saw the opportunity and began a revolution. The United States and others tried to aid the Russian government, but it eventually collapsed with a Communist government taking its place which would have massive implications throughout the century.
  • Red Scare

    Even though World War I was over, there still loomed a greater fear to those at home, the Russian Communist regime. In 1919 after all the chaos and commotion over the Great War had ended, many began to fear that there were Communists who infiltrated the United States and a revolution could start. There was mass panic over it and it took a while for people to calm down, but eventually the scare was over but that doesn't mean Communism was.
  • Women's suffrage

    The Twentieth Amendment established women's suffrage across the nation. Although some states had already started to allow this, this amendment made it a right to women across the nation, greatly increasing the amount of citizens that could vote.
