During the Spanish-American War, warships in the Pacific fleet had to sail16,000 miles around the tip of South AMerica to reacch the Caribbean. While President Rossevelt was waiting to hear from Colombis, he struck a deal with Panamianian rebels when they took action. Rossevelt recognized Panama as a new country. In return Panama gave the United States control of 10mile strip of rain rainforest through the center of Panama
