  • Sinking of the USS Maine

    The USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect Americans. An explosion went off while the ship was in Havana Harbor killing 260 US sailors which was the immediate cause of the Spanish American War.
  • Spanish American War

    1898, it lasted 4 months.
    It was a war between the US & Spain over Cuba's independence.
  • Acquisition of Hawaii

    Hawaii provided a refueling station for American ships and America had planted suger and pineapple plantations. In the 1890s, Queen Liliuokalani tried to take political power back from the American landowners which caused her to be overthrown. After the spanish war, congress voted to annex Hawaii in 1898.
  • Open Door Policy

    US Secretary of State, John Hay announced the policy which gave equal trading rights to all foreign nations in China. He created this policy because he saw China as a vital market for America's industrial economy.
  • Panama Canal

    During the Spanish American war, warships had to sail 16,000 miles so they built this canal in order to send ships back and forth. It took 10 years to build.
  • Roosevelt's Corollary

    Roosevelt barred European countries from using force to collect debts owed from the Dominican Republic. Instead he declared the US would collect the debt for them as an "international police power" which ended up being known as Roosevelt Corollary.
  • Dollar Diplomacy

    Dollar Diplomacy was President Taft's use of American investment to promote American's foreign policy goals.
