    There are flashbacks of Morrie's childhood. His mother was dying, and he wondered "How else can a child confront death?", which is why he knows how to deal with his own death. He has experienced others' deaths, and knew what they felt, first-hand. Once his mother died, and his father has remarried. He is not allowed to talk about his and his brother's original mother, and while he loves his step-mother, the forced silence still hurt him.

    His family was poor. "Uneducated and barely able to speak English, he was terribly poor... Their apartment was a dark, cramped depressing place... They had no luxuries. No car. Sometimes, to make money, Morrie... would wash porch steps for a nickel." His family continued to struggle, especially when David got polio. His father began to isolate himself from his family and Morrie was always "hoping for-but never getting- a show of affection", which led to his affectionate manner.

    Mitch and Morrie College Life
    Now that Morrie has grown and become a teacher, he teaches at a university. Mitch, an early high school graduate, talks to him for the first time. "The oldest teacher, and the youngest student." Taken by Morrie's homeliness, Mitch talks to Morrie more and more, becoming friends. Mitch "take[s] more of Morrie's classes" for the rest of his university life, gifting his favorite teacher a suitcase before he leaves, which will be the last time he sees him for a while.

    "His death sentence came in the summer of 1994. He knew it the day he gave up dancing. He had always been a dancer, my old professor." "My old professor, meanwhile, was stunned by the normalcy of the day around him. Shouldn't the world stop?" Morrie's view of the world was changed. He used to think the world revolved around him, to some degree, but now he can see he is wrong. He had to find new ways to be happy. He couldn't do the things he could, and began to appreciate more.

    Mitch, now a successful journalist, watches the television. Nightline has gone on, and it was about Morrie! Shocked to see what has become of his old professor, he reluctantly visits him, 16 years later.

    For 14 weeks, every Tuesday, he converses with his professor, learning about life, and how to deal with it.
  • Morrie dies

    Morrie dies
    Morrie is finally gone, and Mitch grieves deeply. Mitch fulfills his promise to Morrie, and begins to talk to his grave, and oddly enough, it felt normal, like he's done this for a while. Then he remembers, it's Tuesday
