Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development

  • Trust vs. Mistrust

This is the first stage that begins at birth. This stage is until the age of one year. During this stage, the baby will learn if he or she is able to trust their caregiver or the people around them.
  • Autonomy vs. shame and doubt

This is called Autonomy vs shame and doubt. This is during the first year through the third year. When toddlers are this age, they are very curious and want to see and touch everything. If they are not able to experience this then they will develop shame and doubt.
  • Initiate vs. Guilt

This stage happens during the third year and the fifth year. This happens when children interact and play with other children. If the child gets criticized too much then that will cause guilt.
