In 1325 he left his home for pilgrimage in Mecca. He went through North Africa, Upper Egypt, and reached the town of Aidhab to find out he could not cross the Red Sea for Mecca due to a local war. He went through Syria and Palestine before reaching Mecca. After reaching Mecca he went to Iraq, Iran, and then back to Mecca. He returned to Morocco after visiting Mali.

It was caused by unemployed mercenaries and bandits, which were left uncontrolled to loot, rape, and plunder the lands of Northern France almost at will.
