    Many Latin Americans feared that European countries would try to reconquer the new republics. The US feared this as well. In 1823, President James Monroe issued what came to be called the Monroe Doctrine. This document stated that American continents are not to be considered subjects for colonization by any European powers.

    Japan was in a period of Isolation and the US, along with many other countries, wanted to trade with Japan. President Filmore had Perry take many large ships go to the Harbor of Tokyo with a letter. The Shogun had no choice but to agree to trade with the US. This ended Japans long period of Isolation.

    Because the US helped Panama their independence in 1903, Panama awared the US 10 miles to build a canal. This started the long construction of the Panama Canal. It took the muscle of the US to building this canal. After 10 years, it finally opened in 1914. Large ships from all around the world would use it.
