    The National hockey leauge was not the first hockey leauge invented. The N.H.L was Invented in 1917 with only for teams but currenitly has 30. The founder of the N.H.L is Tommy Gorman. The National Hockey League (NHL) was formed on a chilly November day in 1917. Although most historians say that November 22nd, 1917 was the birth date of the NHL, it wasn't until four days later, on November 26th, that five clubs officially joined the new league.

    After the suspensions of their own players by the Canadiens, in 1922-23. The NHL decided to take a further role in discipline, as it redefined match fouls, changed fines and added presidential review for possible further punishment.

    The Great Depression was starting to take its toll on the NHL. In attempts to solve financial problems, the Pittsburgh Pirates moved to Philadelphia and became the Philadelphia Quakers, but there was nothing about the team to win games. It was intended that the team stay in Philadelphia only until a new arena was built in Pittsburgh. The arena was never built, and the team folded after only one season in the new city. The state of Pennsylvania would be without an NHL team.

    The most famous NHL war veteran, Schmidt enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He lost three-and-a-half years in the prime of his career, was a four-time all-star, and won the Art Ross Trophy and the Hart Trophy an amazing 11 seasons apart. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1961.

    National Hockey League (NHL) began in 1942 with the demise of the Brooklyn Americans, reducing the NHL to six teams. The NHL, comprising the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs, remained stable for a quarter century. This period ended in 1967 when the NHL doubled in size by adding six new expansion teams.

    Until 1943, a player was not allowed to make a forward pass across his own blueline. That changed in the 1943-44 season, when the NHL ruled that players could pass from their defensive zone up to the middle of the rink, which would be marked by a new red line at centre ice.

Goal tenders were geting hurt and what not with no other goalie on the team the scores would get out of hand so by enforcing a back up goalie on every team makes the game more competitive as its no fun to watch a game with no goalie.

    Drafted into the nhl and makes a true impact on hockeys whole future Mr Bobby Orr won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's outstanding rookie and, while the perennially cellar-dwelling Bruins finished in last place that season, sparked a renaissance that propelled the Bruins to make the playoffs the following twenty-nine straight seasons. Most points in one NHL season by a defenceman (139; 1970–71). Most assists in one NHL season by a defenceman (102; 1970–71)

    Bill Masterton played 30 games in the 1967–68 NHL season with the Minnesota North Stars and is the only player in NHL history to be killed as a direct result of an on-ice incident; the NHL annually awards the Bill Masterton Trophy in his honour, and the North Stars retired his number 19.
