    3 years after the start of WW2, and after several incidents with sinking passenger ships, Germany authorized the use of unrestricted submarine warfare, along with offering to the Mexicans a chance to invade the US. The US intercepted this message, and after the sinking of several ships with US passengers on them, the US declared war, completely shifting the way the war was going.

    The Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Near the end of WW2, the USA had possession of most of the Pacific Ocean, but despite that, the Empire of Japan refused to surrender. By order of President Harry S. Truman, an experimental Atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and when Japan still refused to surrender, a second one was dropped on Nagasaki. Over 220 thousand died. After this, Japan finally unconditionally surrendered.

    The Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive happened between January 30th and September 23rd. It was between the coalition supporting South Vietnam, including South Vietnam, and the forces of the Vietcong and North Vietnam. The offensive was a surprise attack on multiple South Vietnamese cities. This is significant as the relatively high US casualties, which caused a resentment against the war, and started the anti-war trends, eventually resulting in the withdraw of US forces from Vietnam.

    Apollo 11

    On July 16, 1969, the US launched a mission to land on the Moon. Four days later, on July 20, the Apollo 11 crew landed on the Moon. After 21½ hours on the Lunar surface, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin launched back up into the ship piloted by Michael Collins, before returning back to Earth on July 24th. This was the first time humans ever landed on the Moon.
