His government is the first social democratic government elected in North America. He brought electricity to family farms and provides a much needed expansion of health care in the province.

    Since he had saw farmers that farmers could not afford Medicare during the Great Depression. So in 1959, Tommy Douglas had finally made his Medicare public. He had tried to help Saskatchewan pre paid the stuff. Other people had attacked the plan because only Saskatchewan got the prepaid Medicare.

    Tommy Douglas was still the National leader even though things had started to fall apart. The party had decided that the only way it can be saved is to develop a relationship with the Canadian labour movement. Douglas lead the NDP from its birth until 1971.
