The man spat in the snow numerous times which led him to realize it was more than likely colder than 50 degrees below.

The man makes it to the forks of the creek swiftly

The man somehow lit all 70 matches by scratching them on his leg. However they began to burn his skin so he dropped it into the snow, causing the flame to go out again.
-
The mans body was so numb, he could only hold the dog, not kill it.
-
The man decided he would kill the dog and use its carcass for warmth.

The man realized he could not continue to survive in these conditions. He decided to make a run for the camp.
-

-
As the man lay in the cold weather in his last moments, he envisions the boys finding his body out in the snow and the Old man.
