    Missouri Compromise
    A written compromise that pronounces Missouri as a slave state just as long as the entire Louisiana Purchased territory would forever prohibit slavery. This compromise was important because it kept the country organized and maintained the balance between Slave-owners and Abolitionists.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    James Monroe's doctrine gave more independence to America, when stating that the European powers were prohibited from disrespecting the Western Hemisphere. This doctrine was important because it gave Americans a larger right to any of the European powers.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    The Trail of Tears existed between 1838-1839, a couple of years after Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act in 1830. This Trail of Tears is often reminded to show the conditions of many Indians who were forced to resettle and what they walked through. It's important to understand the signs of discrimination against these natives.

    The Battle of the Alamo is greatly known for its chance to give Texas the opportunity to obtain independence. This battle shared a huge role in the Texas Revolution against Mexico. The United States fought the Mexicans to help gain Texas' independence. This was important because it reminds us the reason why America had a better democracy.

    The Panic of 1837 was well-known for its economic crisis. It brought the country into a deep recession. Many people blamed President Martin Van Buren for the cause of this financial crisis. The Panic of 1837 was important to note for its cause of the discontinuation of banks in America.

    Sutter's Fort
    John A Sutter built a fort in California during the famous Gold Rush in the 1850s. This is important because it helped some people during the Gold Rush

    -Because the Mexicans threatened to attack US if the US annexed any Mexican regions
    -importance: it gave the Americans freedom from the Mexicans and they were able to purchase more land from the Mexicans later on

    Bear Flag Revolt
    In 1846, California settlers wanted independence from Mexico.
    -proclaimed California as an independent republic
    -It is important to remember this revolt because it proved that California was a huge contribution to the United States.
    -It became a free state which caused lots of controversy

    -because California was proclaimed as a free-state it ruined the purpose of the Missouri Compromise
    -the compromise was to allow the popular sovereignty in the new states to decide whether a state would be free or not.
    -it was the last compromise before the Civil War

    The Fugitive slave act gave permission to slave-owners to punish runaway slaves. It was significant because it was very controversial between the different regions within the country. It was one of the factors that led to Civil War

    -United States gained a portion of Mexican territory, now becoming part of the Arizona and New Mexico
    -The purchase is important because it released gave the United States and Mexico a compromise.

    -Kansas becomes a state in the United States of America
    -however, debates between the two perspectives of how this state should become (slave or free) is solved through a bloody, violent battle in Kansas.
    -It's important to remember Bloody Kansas as they debate over how the Missouri Compromise should be viewed
    -because it overturned the Missouri Compromise, it was decided to rely on the popular sovereignty
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    -Could not be sued to freedom because the Supreme Court insists that he's a slave.
    -Significance: it shows that many blacks did not have much freedom and couldn't release themselves from slave-owners.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    -an event by John Brown that gave permission to local slaves to be armed with weapons.
    -However, he was stopped and arrested for these actions, as well as being accused for murder.
    -This is important to learn that it was feared to have blacks armed with weapons and it clearly proves that the many populations debated whether they should trust blacks being armed.
    -this revolt represented his desire to end this hate
  • 7 states in the Deep South secede

    Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas secede after the election of Abraham Lincoln
  • South Carolina seceded

    -spurred many states to leave the Union and form the Confederacy
  • Civil War (starting date)

    Civil War (starting date)
    -war broke out in South Carolina when SC finally decided to leave the Union
    -Confederates made the first move on the Union
    -The war continued to separate the two different opposing views of the country
    -Important to note that this was the first time America suffered a conflict within its own country after the Founding Fathers declared this country as independent and united
  • 4 other states from the Upper South secede

    Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia join the Confederacy after the battle in Fort Sumner
    -this is important to note that these states represented the rebellious states
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    -Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that would help free the slaves in the southern states
    -This issue is important because it finally resolved the conflict between the different unions.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    -a major victory for the Union against the Confederate states
    -this was important because it lowered the Confederates' hope for victory
    -led to the Union victory at the end of the Civil War
  • Gettyburg Address

    Gettyburg Address
    -Lincoln's famous speech that reminded Americans that we were a united country and that we all must be equal
    -He also reminded the country all the hard work that our founding fathers worked to bring them there.
    -this speech is important because Lincoln states that this war is necessary to unite this country and to adjust the pieces to make this country unite as a whole

    -The union ends the war with a victory in its hands
    -The Union had a great advantage due to its advanced weapons and technology and their motivation to unite this country
    -This event reminds us of the time of when the country was the most separated and traditions wanted to be changed

    -designed to permanently abolish slavery
    -marking the end of the Civil War
    -a symbol of Union's victory
  • 14th amendment

    All citizens born in the United States are all considered Americans, even the African Americans.
    -this gave African Americans higher recognition and reputation
    -finalized the African American position in the country/society
  • 15th amendment

    -prohibits the government from preventing any person of any color or race from voting
    -this is important because it gave people more rights to vote
