First recorded Telescopic study of space

Mar 7, 1610

This was the first-ever recorded telescopic study of space and the night sky. Within this study, people discovered Jupiters' moons, lunar craters, and the phases of Venus.

First discovery of Uranus

1781

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and has the third-largest diameter in our solar system. It was the first planet found with the aid of a telescope, Uranus was discovered in 1781 by astronomer William Herschel, although he originally thought it was either a comet or a star.

Publication of Exploration of the Universe with Rocket-Propelled Vehicles

1903

This publication showed physical space exploration was theoretically possible, including the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, multi-staged rockets, and using liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen in the liquid propellant. This helped the study of space because in the future they would be able to get material from the moon to study.

First observation of an extrasolar planet

1917

The first exoplanet that was found was the Van Maanen 2. At this point in time, people did not know that other galaxies existed and this discovery made people think that there might be another place like ours.

Other galaxies are out there

1924

The Society for Studies of Interplanetary Travel was founded. This showed that the milky way was just a galaxy and that there were others out there.

First spaceflight

This was a huge deal because the theory for space flight was found years ago, but now it was coming true. This furthered the study of space because now that we know we can go into space, they're able to get rocks and do experiments in space.

It only took two years before scientists conducted experiments in space starting with cosmic radiation experiments.

It took several years and several spacecraft, but humanity finally did it and made it to the moon. They weren't able to do a soft landing yet, but they were getting closer and closer to their goal.

First human on the moon

Jul 21, 1969

It took 10 years since having hit the moon, the first human landed on the moon upon Apollo 11. The two people onboard Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin were the first two humans to step on the moon.

First soft landing on Mars.

Dec 2, 1971

This event allowed us to get close-up pictures of Mars and furthered our signal in the wide universe.

This was an important event because it showed that we were furthering our reach in the universe slowly, but also taking our time to look at other areas.

This was the first confirmed lake on other celestial bodies, confirming that there could be life on other planets.
