Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • The Sugar Act

The Sugar Act was the attempt to stop the smuggling of sugar and molasses. Colonists would keep smuggling and colonists boycotted British luxury goods. Was repealed by Britain, but replaced by the Revenue Act.
  • Currency Act

The Currency Act is where Britain banned paper money. The colonists created the First Continental Congress, which published the Declaration of Rights.
  • The Stamp Act

The Stamp Act was a tax on all paper documents. Colonists turned into violent mobs and forced stamp collectors into resigning. Parliament repealed the act, but they issued another act the same day, The Declaratory Act.
  • Declaratory Act

Passed after the repeal of the Stamp Act. Gave Britain authority to make and pass laws for the colonies. The colonies did not like this because they still had no representation within parliament. Parliament would keep colonists out of parliament.
  • Tea Act

The Tea Act was passed to reduce the surplus of tea in Britain. The colonists did not like having to pay taxes on tea, and being forced to buy that to, so they turned Boston Harbor into a big tea cup. To punish the colonial radicals, Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts.
