Timeline of programming

  • Plankalkul

Plankalkul was first designed by Konrad Zuse in 1948 but it wasn't until 1998 before it was first implemented. It was designed for engineering purposes. Plankalkul means formal system of planning.
  • FORTRAN

FORTRAN was developed in the 1950's by IBM for science and engineering applications. The name is from Formula Translating System. It is today for numerical weather prediction, computational chemistry and many other advance scientific applications.
  • MATH-MATIC

MATH-MATIC is an early programming language for the
UNIVAC I and UNIVAC II created by a team led by Charles Katz. MATH-MATIC was the insperation for the creation of the programming language COBOL.
  • Lisp

Lisp invented by John McCarthy in 1958 but was developed by Steve Russell, Timothy P. Hart, and Mike Levin in 1962. Lisp was originally created for practical mathematical notation but quickly became popular for artifical intelligence research. the name lisp is from LISt Processing
  • COBOL

It was designed in 1959 by the Conference on Data Systems Languages (CODASYL). COBOL means COmmon Buisness Oriented Language. Just like the name it is used mainly for buisness programs such as payroll and accounting
  • RPG

RPG was developed by IBM in 1959. It is used in buisness applications. The name RPG came from Report Program Generator. It is still used today on IBM operating systems.
  • Basic

Basic is an acronym for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. It was developed by John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz. It is used for a lot of different applicatications.
  • LOGO

Logo was developed in 1967 by Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert. The purpose of it is for teaching lisp based programming. Logo came from the greek word Logos which means word or thought as the developers wanted to distinguish it from numerical programming.
  • B

Was developed at Bell Labs by Ken Thompson with Dennis Ritchie. It is used for non-numeric applications like system programming.
  • Period: to

    C

C was originally developed by Dennis Ritchie between 1969 and 1973 at AT&T Bell Labs. C is usually used for system programming.
  • ML

ML was developed by Robin Milner at Edinburgh college. It stands for metalanguage. It was developed for use in the LCF theorem prover.
  • PASCAL

PASCAL was designed in 1968 to 1969 and was released in 1970 by Niklaus Wirth. PASCAL was named after french mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal. PASCAL was created to teach students structured programming.
  • SQL

SQL is a special-purpose programming language designed for managing data held in a relational database management system. It was developed by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce in the realy 1970's. It was originally named SEQUEL but was changed to SQL which means Structured Query Language.
  • Period: to

    ADA

Was developed by a team led by Dr. Jean Ichbiah.
Was named after the first programmer, Ada Bryon.
Was originally used for object oriented programming, but now has evolved to do multi-purpose.
  • C++

C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup at Bell labs in 1983. It has many different purposes but are mostly used for computer applications from art to videogames.
  • Python

Python is a widely used general purpose programming language created in december 1989 by Guido van Rossum as a sucessor to ABC language. The name came from the series Monty Python's Flying Circus as Guido van Rossum was a big fan.
  • Visual Basic

Visual Basic was developed by Microsoft when they combined ruby a programmable form system they was developing with the BASIC language to creat Visual Basic. Itt is used for creating applications.
  • Java

Java was developed by James Gosling in 1995 and is one of the most popular programming languages. It is mainly used today for client-server web applications.
  • Javascript

Javascript was developed by Brendan Eich at Netscape Communications in 1995. It is most commonly used today as part of web browsers that allows a client side script to be able to interact with the user. Java and Javascript are unrelated and are very different in the uses.
  • PHP

PHP is a side script programming language created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995. It is used in web development but can also be used as a general purpose language. PHP originally meant Personal Home Page but now means Hypertext Processor.
  • Delphi

Delphi was developed in february of 1995 by Borland Computer software. It is a object oriented program. One of the uses for it is building applications.
