Timeline of Operation Desert Storm by Jessica Brice

  • Saddam Hussein Comes Into Power and is elected president of Iraq

  • Meeting of foreign ministers after war between Iran and Iraq

    After ending of war between Iraq and Iran, two states foreign ministers met, including Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. In his speech he accused neighboring nation of Kuwait of siphoning crude oil from the Ar-Rumaylah fields located along common border.
  • Invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi Republican Guard

    Iraqi Republican Guard invaded the country of Kuwait and seized it. This sparked an immediate response from the U. S. (Operation Desert Shield) to make sure that they did not attack Kuwait’s neighbor, Saudi Arabia and its oil.
  • Deployment of U.S. forces begin.

  • President Bush signs National Security Directive 45, “U.S. Policy in Response to the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait”.

    It dictated the country’s actions and created a plan of action for U.S. troops.
  • A U.N. ultimatum (a final uncompromising demand or set of terms issued by a certain party) is issued.

  • Testing of Iraqi Scud Missiles

    Six weeks before Operation Desert Storm launched, Iraq tested and launched three Scud missiles which impacted in Western Iraq.
  • U.S. launched air attacks against Israeli targets.

  • Iraq Attacks Israel With Seven Scud Missiles

    The U.S. Patriot missile successfully intercepts the first Scud over Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
  • Operation Desert Storm air war phase begins.

  • President Bush authorizes the call to send one million National Guardsmen to Israel for up to two years

  • The DOD (Department of Defense) announces the deployment of Europe-based Patriot missiles to Israel

  • Iraq creates a massive oil slick in the Persian Gulf off of Kuwait in an attempt to ward off U.S. naval attacks

  • Iraqis strike Khafji, Saudi Arabia

  • Iraq captures first female ‘prisoner of war’ (POW).

  • Iraqis ignite an estimated 700 oil wells to wreak more havoc

  • City of Kuwait is considered liberated (freed), and President Bush halts war

  • DOD announces first troop redeployment home

  • Relief supply airdrops to Kurdish refugees in Turkey and northern Iraq

  • Iraq finally accepts cease-fire terms

  • Cease-fire takes effect

  • U.N. commission assumes responsibility for Kurdish refugees

  • President Bush issues a final decision demanding that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein step down from power and leave the country under the threat of war.

    Huessein does not obey.
