Timeline of landmark legislation

  • Plessy V Ferguson

    Homer Plessy refused to sit in the same car as an African american. This had a negative impact because this sparked the segregation era.
  • Brown V Board

    Black and whites not being able to learn in the same area went against the fourteenth amendment and were immediately stopped. This was a positive impact because it was going to end segregation.
  • Cooper V Aaron

    Government officials refused to follow Brown V Board. This is negative because no one should live in isolation.
  • Engel V Vitale

    Religion was written as a violation of the first amendment. This is a positive effect because not everyone supports religion.
  • Title IX

    This prohibited sex discrimination to be practiced in schools. This is a positive impact because female students would be treated just the same as male students.
  • Education of all handicapped children

    Funding began for all handicap children to do all the things other students would do. This is a positive impact because everyone would be treated as equal.
  • Plyer V Doe

    They denied funding to undocumented immigrant children for education. This negatively impacted the children who were not getting education.
  • Grutter V Bollinger

    Barbara Gutter said that it was against her equal rights when a university declined her application that way they can accept a diverse student. This is a positive impact because it shouldn't matter about how the school is seen. It should depend on the determination of the student.
