Timeline of Computer Programming languages

  • The first programming language was written

Ada Lovelace wrote what is considered to be the first programming language in 1842-43 based on the design of the Analytical Machine.
  • The first "modern" language was written.

Konrad Zuse writes the first "modern" programming language, Plankalkül in 1943
  • FORTRAN is created

John Backus creates FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslator) in 1955
  • MATH-MATIC is created

The commercial compiler for the UNIVAC computer is released by Sperry Rand, developed by Grace Hopper using improvements from her previous compilers in 1957
  • LISP is created

LISP (LISt Processor) is created by John McCarthy in 1958
  • COBOL and RPG is created

COBOL (COmmon Business Oriented Language) is created in 1959 by Grace Hopper, while RPG is created by IBM in the same year
  • ASCII is created

ASCII(American Standard Code II) code is created in 1963 by Bob Bemer. The ASCII code consists of 128 unique strings of ones and zeros. Each sequence represents a letter of the English alphabet, a number, punctuation, or a function such as a carriage return. ASCII can only represent up to 256 symbols, and for this reason, many other languages are better supported by Unicode, which has the ability to represent over 100,000 symbols.
  • BASIC is created

BASIC (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) is created in 1964 by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz to help their students learn programming.
  • LOGO is created

LOGO is created by Seymour Papert in 1967 as a programming language kids could use and understand
  • The B programming language is created

The B programming language is created in 1969, the precursor to the C programming language
  • Pascal is created

The programming language Pascal is created in 1970, named after French physicist, mathematician and inventor turned philosopher Blaise Pascal, introduced and created by Professor Niklaus Wirth
  • C programming is created

The C programming language is created in 1972
  • The ML programming language is created

The ML programming language is created in 1973
  • The SQL language is created

The SQL language is created for databases in 1978
  • Period: to

The US Department of Defense begins to use Ada

In the early 1980s, the DOD tasked programmers John Ichbiah and S. Tucker Taft to create a programming language that they could use, and in turn, they created Ada, named for Ada Lovelace, the first programmer, which combined Pascal-like notation with the ability to package operations and data into independent modules.
  • C++ is created

The C++ language is created in 1985 by Bjarne Stroustrup that would allow for more complex programs and which combined the low-level features of BCPL with the high-level structures of Simula.
  • Microsoft releases VIsual Basic

Microsoft releases the first instalment of VIsual Basic in 1991
  • Python is created

    Python is created in 1991
  • Java, Javascript, PHP, and Delphi are created

Java, based off of C language and Pascal, is created in 1995, while an unrelated language, Javascript, was created the same year, as well as the PHP and Delphi languages.
  • Plankalkül is implemented

Plankalkül is implemented for the first time in 1998
  • Microsoft releases VIsual Basic 2010

Microsoft releases the 9th version of Visual Basic in 2010
