Giovanni da Verrazzano was born on January 23, 1485, in Val di Greve, Italy. He was very well educated as a child. He also had a younger brother, Giralomo.

At the age of 21, Verrazzano moved to port Dieppe, France. Dieppe was known for its mapmakers. This is where Verrazzano began his maritime career as a navigator.

Verrazzano attacked many ships including those of the Spanish. He even captured a Spanish ship with 2 million dollars worth of gold.

Giovanni de Verrazzano, on the Delfina, enters the Bay of New York. He and his crew stayed there until a storm pushed them to somewhere else They also stopped at Newport, Rhode Island. Soon after, Verrazzano returns to France.

Verrazzano died on October 15, 1528. He landed on an island south of Jamacia in the Lesser Antilles. He was killed and eaten by cannibalistic natives.
