He was born the 18th April of 1973. In Arsella, Arsi, Ethiopia. He had 9 brothers and his father was a farmer.

During his first years of life, he had to work in the countryside with all his family. Besides, when he was four, he started school, which was 10 kilometres far away from his house, and he had to get there running. Furthermore, when Haile told his father he loved running and he was good at it, his dad answered he was born to work in the countryside and he wouldn´t be succesfull in running

In 1993, he succeeded in winning the mundial championchip in the 10000 metres and 5000 metres races. When his father heard that, he starting believing in his son.

He started breaking world records with extraordinary marks. He won all the races he ran during this period, all the Olympic Games, the indoors and outdoors mundial championchips and he broke more than once his own world records. Nobody could beat him. However, he was the kindnest person you can imagine.

In 2004, in the Olympic games, he finished in fifth position and he had to be operated because of an injury in his Aquiles tendon.

He started running half and full marathons after his operation. He won all the races he ran and he broke six world records in these distances.

Haile decided to give up the professional competition when he was 43. He ran his last marathon in London, unexpectedly, he won it. This was the end of "the emperor", as the people used to call him. He is considered a legend of athletics.
