Boy´s father slipped and fell from the roof so he broke his left arm below the elbow. The doctor was so drunk that he mistook the fractured elbow for a dislocated shoulder. So they had to amputate the arm at the elbow.

Mrs. Pratchett was the sweet-shop owner, one day the children decided to put a dead mouse inside a jar of sweets. It was Boy´s idea so he felt like a hero.

The boys realized the sweet-shop was closed so they were afraid of Mrs. Pratchett destination. Was she dead? When they reached school Mrs. Pratchett identified the boys so they were punished with a cane by the Headmaster Mr Coombes.

The only unpleasant memory of the summer holidays in Norway was when the doctor took out Boy´s adenoids without anaesthetic.

Sunday morning was letter-writting time, the headmaster was always peering over the children shoulders to control what they were writing.

Boy was nine years old and had just started a whole new adventure at a boarding school (prep school), It was in a part of England near South Wales called Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

In the dormitory floor ruled the Matron. She was the terror of all kids in the school. She was always in a bad mood and also sent children to the Headmaster to be hit with the cane.
