  • 507 BCE

    Ancient Greek Democracy

    Different from modern day democracy
    -More direct than representative
    -It was a duty for men over the age of 20 to take part in the democracy
    -Officials in the democracy were elected in Assembly and chosen in a process called sortition.
  • 1250

    Magna Carta

    -Royal Charter that says that everyone is subject to the law, even the king
    -Guarantees the rights of individuals (the right to justice and fair trial)
  • 1400

    The Renaissance

    -People became aware of individualism
    -Secularism began to take place
    -Humanism
  • 1500

    Haudenosaunee Confederacy (15C-1776)

    -Outlined path to harmony and unity among nations
    -Divided powers between different levels of government
    -Established the equal participation of people, including women, in the government
    -Guaranteed certain rights and freedoms (Freedom of Speech and rights of the individual)
  • 1517

    The Protestant Reformation (1517-1648

    -Religious reformation
    -Creation of a branch of Christianity called Protestantism
  • American Revolution

    -John Lockes ideas plus other ideas inspired American colonists to declare independence from Britain
    -Established Republican form of government
  • French Revolution

    -Attempt to transform society by using liberal principles
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

    National assembly has signed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
    -Foundational document for individual freedom
  • The Enlightenment

    -The age of Reason (People accepting the power of human reason)
    -Individuals knew they had worth
    -inalienable and natural rights
    -Democratic values were starting to form
    -Authority began to rest with with the people and not the ruler
  • The Industrial Revolution (18th-19th century)

    Economic growth skyrocketed
    -Market gained power
    -Individuals got rewarded for their initiative
    -Individuals were held responsible for success or failure
    -People could pursue their own wealth
  • Changes to the class system

    -More jobs arose so workers were able to gain wealth
    -Began to challenge the aristocratic groups for power and position in society
    -Labourers were faced with horrible working conditions and insufficient wages to meet their basic needs
