On September 11, 2001 two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. Another plane crashedinto the Pentagon. The plan was created by Osama Bin Laden. Osama wanted to scare the United States and tell them to leave him alone.

On October 24, 2002 two criminal snipers were arrested at a maryland rest stop. Their names were John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo. They were two snipers that were turning gas stations and malls into hunting grounds near the nations capital. They had killed 10 and wounded 3, they were linked to the other cases in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Montgomery, and Baton Rouge. They just did it for harmful fun.

On February 1, 2003 the Columbia space shuttle lost contact with NASA just minutes before it was scheduled to land in Florida. Seven astronauts died when the shuttle broke apart. NASA believes that foam hit the wings of the shuttle shortly after take off.

In 2004 the Boston Red Sox won the world series. It was the first time in 86 years. In the world series the Boston Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals. The cardinals had the best regular season record, but fell short in the world series.

Between August 23 and August 30 a category 5 hurricane named "Katrina" hit the coasts of Mississippi, Louisiana, Bahamas, South Florida, Cuba, and many more. Katrina had over 1,833 fatalities. It was the costliest and it was in the top five of deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States.

On september 4, 2006 Steve Irwin, an alligator hunter was killed by a stingray in Cairns, Austrailia. He was making a video on the life of the Great Barrier Reef.

On April 16, 2007 a gunman broke into a Virginia Tech and killed 33 people and then killed himself. He also wounded 15 others.

On January 20, 2008 Barack Obama took the oath to be come the first black president in the United States. He started as a rookie senator from Illinois and now ia the president.

On Janurary 15, 2009 a plane from LaGuardia Airport piloted by Chelsey Sullenburger was landed safely with no one killed in the Hudson River.

On April 20, 2010 an explosion on the BP oil ship that caused 5 million barrels of oil gushed into the Gulf's ocean. 11 workers were killed in the explosions.

On May 2, 2011 Osama Bin Laden, a terrorist who had the plan for 9/11 was shot and killed in his compound in Abbottabad. They had finally tracked him down.

On September 23, 2012 the baby panda died at the national zoo. The panda was unnamed. The panda had fluid in his abdomen and discoloration in the liver.
