    Plessy v. Ferguson
    Plessy v. Ferguson was a Supreme Court case that started because a partially African American man refused to sit in the "black section" of the train. He claimed that his 14th amendment was being violated and he had the right to sit in the "white section" of the train. Plessy v. Ferguson said that racial segregation was constitutional under the "separate but equal" doctrine.

    The terrible living conditions endured by immigrants were being recognized and understood. The Tenement Act was one of the first laws to ban dark, inhumane, poorly venerated tenement buildings in the state of New York. Because of this law, things such as out-ward facing windows, indoor bathrooms, proper ventilation, and fire safeguards, were now required for tenement buildings.

    The Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York was burned down. A fire broke out in the company factory and 145 workers were killed because everyone was trapped and there were no working fire escape routes. The fire was important because it brought attention to the dangerous sweatshop conditions for workers in factories.
