  • The Missouri Compromise of 1820

    The Missouri Compromise of 1820
    The Missouri Compromise of 1820 temporarily removed the differences between the North and South. Henry Clay wrote the compromise in 1820 that balanced power in congress by adding two states to the union. Maine was added as a free state while Missouri was added as a slave state. Anything above the missouri compromise line would be considered free territory in the future.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    A bill proposed to congress that would ban slavery in the newly acquired territories of the mexican cession. This did not pass though because the south thought this to be unfair because it did not allow slavery to be expanded into the west.This would decrease their votes in the government and possibly the North could then vote slavery to be abolished.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Was a bill proposed in congress that was designed to be a temporary fix to the growing slavery issue. It was a line that divided the territories into free or slave. This fix did not last long because new state wanted to be added to the union. Gave the south the satisfaction of having equal votes in the government.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Was a law that gave the power to slave owners that had run away slaves to claim them back, free or not. The slave had no say in the accusing and some innocent free African Americans were falsely accused of being a runaway slave. This made the underground railroad more popular.
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin
    Was a book written by a woman named Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book was very popular in the north because it showed the horror of slavery. This opened many people minds about the subject. The south was very mad about the book calling it “North Propaganda” and “Over-exaggeration”.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    Was a bill that allowed the residents of Kansas and Nebraska to vote on the issue of slavery and if they wanted to be free or slave. But many other residents from all over the country traveled to these areas to vote on this issue. This caused a lot of violence especially in kansas which is why this time in history was named “Bleeding kansas”. This questioned the overall theory on popular sovereignty and the use of it with slavery.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Was a court case that involved a black slave named Dred scott and if he was free in the North. HE was brought up north by his owner and when his owner died, he fought for his freedom because he was in the free north. But the court ruled that he was property and he was sent back south and was sold to a new owner.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    Was a race between Lincoln and Douglas to see who to make it into congress for Illinois. IT was so popular and made it into world news because it talked about key parts about slavery and how they were going to handle it. It was the first major politician move that gave Lincoln famous.
  • John Brown’s Raid

    John Brown’s Raid
    John brown was a revolutionist that believed he was the savior chosen by god to get rid of slavery. Was a raid on a federal stockpile in Harpers Ferry, WV. He wanted to incite a slave revolt. He had hoped that when word spread, slaves would come and help him. But when no one came the us marines captured him.
  • Lincoln's Election of 1860

    Lincoln's Election of 1860
    Lincoln was elected as the 19th president on November 6th 1860, all the states in the country voted Lincoln came out victorious. The election was the closest election ever.

    After many states had seceded from the Nation due to the election of Lincoln, the south fought the north in a war that is known as the civil war. The civil war took place all over the US on April 12th, 1861
