Thomas pattison was born on the 5th of January 1805 in Edinburgh, Scotland. he was either born deaf or lost his hearing early on in life.

He took the initiative to open the first deaf school in Australia. Later to become the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). Three week later Frederick J Rose founded The Victorian College for the Deaf.
