    The Second Red Scare was the promotion of the fear of a potential rise of communism. The Second Red Scare was known as "McCarthyism" because Senator Joseph McCain was its biggest supporter. This was an important time in history because this event caused a huge threat by the Soviet Union.

    The Geneva Conference begins to resolve problems in Asia.
    This conference was called to order to try and resolve some of the issues that Asia had, including the war between the French and the nationalists in Indochina. As part of the Geneva Agreements the French agreed to withdraw their troops from Northern Vietnam. This was important because the conference marked a turning point in the United States' involvement in Vietnam.

    In 1957 in a town called Little Rock a new school year was about to begin when a group of white segregationists tried to prevent 9 African American teenagers from going to school.     When the US became the prime ally of South Vietnam
    In the early 1960's the US became South Vietnam's prime ally. The US advisors were helping the Vietnamese fight off the gorillas. When JFK became president he sent more advisors in to help Vietnam but soon the gorilla fighters started to succeed making South Vietnam a bad ally for the US. This is important because this even produces the US involvement in the Vietnam War.

    When Civil Rights became JFK's priority.
    In the summer of 1963 in Birmingham Alabama, a group of highschoolers marched for their civil rights. While they were marching the Birmingham police attacked the teenagers with dogs and high powered hoses. When Kennedy got his news he was sickened and wrote a civil writes bill. Later in 1964 JFK's bill went through.

    President Johnson signed the NSAM 273.
    President Johnson signed the NSAM 273 which signaled a reversal of JKF's policy. Kennedy's policy was to withdraw 1,000 troops from the war and Johnson sent them back.

    On July 12 1965, US Marine Corps Lieutenant Frank Reasoner of Kellog was the first Vietnam to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. Reasoner was previously killed in an ambush so he wasn't actually there to receive the medal but he was still honored the medal.

    America's enemies in Vietnam used the Tet New Year to launch a surprise attack against US forces. The war was then taken to the cities of South Vietnam. This was a political disaster because Lindon B. Johnson told everyone that victory was just around the corner. This was important because Lindon B.     President Nixon begins secret bombing of Cambodia.
    President Nixon and Melvin Laird authorized the raids against Cambodia. This event is very important because Nixon started a four year long bombing campaign in the skies of Cambodia. Nixon did this with hopes of destroying the North Vietnamese Bases. It eventually led to the instillation of the Pol Pot regime.

    The last American combat soldiers left Vietnam while military advisors remained to protect instillations. This was extremely important because for the United States this meant the war was officially over.

    Carter Issues Pardon to Draft Evaders.
    In 1977, on Jimmy Carter's first day of being in office he granted pardons to hundreds of of thousands of men who had evaded the draft during the Vietnam War by fleeing the country. This was important because as a result of Carter granting pardons, 209,517 men were accused of violating draft laws, while another 360,000 were never formally charged.

    "Boat People" Flee Vietnam
    Boat people refers to Vietnamese refugees who fled Vietnam on boats or a ship after the Vietnam war. Boat people are only people who fled Vietnam and arrived in another country. The 800,000 boats filled with people fleeing from Vietnam caused an international humanitarian with the Southeast Asian Countries. After a conference the rest of the world agreed to assume most of the costs of caring for the boat people and settling them down in their country.
