The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Takes Place
At about 4:40 a fire started on the eighth floor of the Asch builing in New York City. The fire went on for a half-hour. The doors on the ninth floor were locked so that workers couldn't leave early, but this arguably caused almost 150 deaths of mostly young women new to the country.

    The Next Day
A temporary mourge was set up on the street where families went to identify their loved ones that died in the fire. All but six were identified.
  • Labor Relations Act Passed

Gives workers in the private sector the right to unionize. Unions usually result in better working conditions. Bad working conditions was one of the reasons the Triangle Fire was so deadly.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act Passed

This act passed by Congress set a nationwide minimum wage, set a 44 hour maximum working week, and banned oppresive child labor. If the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory existed after this bill was passed, it would violate all of these set conditions.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act Passed

This law created a national occupational saftey agency and made safteyrequirements in the workplace. There were no saftey requirements in 1911 to protect factory workers, resulting in tragedies like the Triangle fire.
