Bell's first telephones
In 1860s and 1870s a lot of people like Johann Reis, Antonio Meucci.. were all trying out the first telephones, but in 1879 Bell's was the first patent. Bell's fist telephone had one combined mouthpiece and earpiece. When you spoke into the born the voice was comberted into electric signals which were carried along telephone wires. -

Separate mouthpiece phone
Thomas Edison made a telephone with a separate mouthpiece and earpiece and in 1880s, all telephone calls had to go through an operator. -

The Telegraph
The telegraph was invented, and signals were first sent along wires. Nowdays, over one billion people send messages by mobile phone using communication satellites.
