Freedom 7 was the first major part in the Space Race by the United States.This was the first time an American man left this planet and went into orbit. His name was Alan B. Shepard, Jr. -

The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova. She was launched aboard the Vostok 6 by the Soviet Union. -
Apollo 11
The first men on the moon flew on Apollo 11. The men that landed on the moon included Neil Armstong and Buzz Alderman. One man stayed in the ship until they returned. His name was Michael Collins. -
Luna 15
The Luna 15 was an attempt to land a rover on the moon the day after Neil Armstong touched down on the moon. This was attempted by the Soviet Union. It crashed before it hit the surface because they tried to reroute it to land near the Americans. -
The U.S. and Soviet Union Agree to Work Together
The space race ended after the landing on the moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. After this the Soviets and the U.S. chose to work together.
