    Eisenhower wins the 1952 election against democrat Adlai Stevenson, and then was reelected in 1956.

    The Space Race

    The first satellite to orbit earth was called the Sputnik, a Soviet Union aircraft, and it launched on October 4, 1957. Sputnik pressured the United States towards launching their own satellite named Explorer 1 in 1958. After both countries made advances in launching satellites and even animals into space, the space race began to lose its momentum when the United States landed Apollo 11 on the moon on July 20, 1969.

    John F. Kennedy becomes President

    JFK won the presidential election of 1960 against Republican Richard Nixon. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963, and his VP Lyndon B. Johnson became the president

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    On October 12, American aircrafts sighted Soviet missiles in Cuba. On the 24 the U.S. navy set up a blockade in the ocean surrounding Cuba in an attempt to barricade the Soviets from taking more missiles to Cuba. On October 26, a letter from Soviet leader Khrushchev said the Soviets would remove their missiles if the United States removed their missiles from Turkey and promised to not invade Cuba. The two countries reached an agreement, and the threat of nuclear war was over by October 28, 1962

    Thousands marched to Washington D.C. to gain support for the Civil Rights movement. During this rally, Martian Luther King made his famous " I have a Dream" Speech

    LBJ becomes president after the assassination of JFK in November of 1963. He then ran in 1964 and won against Berry Coldwater

    The Civil Rights Act made it illegal to discriminate based on race, religion, and gender. No segregation was allowed, but many found ways around this fact.

    American involvement Vietnam War

    In 1954, Vietnam was split into two countries after the French army was defeated at Dien Bien Phu. American troops first landed in Vietnam in June 1965 with great support of the American public, but this support deteriorated quickly when it seemed the war was making no progress. The last of the American troops were removed from Vietnam in 1973 but the war continued until 1976 when the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was formed

    MLK was the head of the Civil Rights movement in America during the 1960's. During his stay in Memphis, Tennessee, MLK was assassinated by James Earl Ray.

    Richard Nixon becomes president

    Richard Nixon won the election of 1968 against Humphrey. He ran again in 1972 and won, but because of a political scandal he resigned (the first and only president to do so) and his VP had resigned the year before, making Nixon's next VP Ford, President in 1974.

    In hopes of improving the environment, this act was passed to preserve the quality of nature. The Environmental Protection Agency was also created under this act.

    Secret papers were leaked to the press about the true nature of Americas involvement in Vietnam. Nixon attempted to keep these from being released but they were leaked.
  • Watergate Scandal

    Watergate was the building where the Democrat National Committee was held, five men were arrested after attempting to place bugs in the building. These men were tied to the CIA, White House, and FBI. Pay off's and cover-up occurred and Nixon won the next election, but two reporters refused to accept the answers they had been given. Nixon had been recording meetings held in the oval office and when asked to turn them in, he refused. Nixon then resigned, becoming the first and only to do so.

    Gerald Ford became Nixon's VP after Agnew (Nixon's VP) resigned. After Nixon resigned in 1973, Gerald Ford became the president of the United States
