  • The treaty of Versailles

    The treaty of Versailles
    After the great war, Americia was devastated. They never wanted to experience anything like that again. So, the allies of the war wanted to come up with a plan to keep peace amoung the countries. This was called the treaty of Versailles. This famous treaty was signed at Versailles palace in Paris. All the countries suffered casualties and damage, however not like Europe. It was left and ruins and the treaty excluded Germany. This made the country feel anger toward the United States.
  • The start of Prohibition

    The start of Prohibition
    The 18'th amendment prohibited the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol. This didn't come into affect until January 16, 1920. Since the Great war ended, many people believed that the main ingredient in alcohol, grain, should be used to help hunger instead of being used for consumption. Many individuals in this decade contined to use alcohol, even though it was illegal. Illegal bars, known as speakeasies, were popular in the 1920's. Bath tub gin was also created.
  • Sacco and Vanzetti gets arrested

    Sacco and Vanzetti gets arrested
    On this date two men named Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested. These two italian immigrants were acccused of theft and murder. While both men were arrested police officers found guns on both of them, which didn't make them look good to the officials. Both men were convicted to show in trial and later executed on August 23, 1927.
  • Woman Voting

    Woman Voting
    The 19'th amendment gave woman the right to vote. This amendment is also known as the Susan B. Anthony amendment, because she strove for woman's rights, no matter what obstacles got in her way. Woman voting was a big thing for this decade. They have tried for many years to be equal to men, now they can enjoy the power of voting!
  • American Birth Control League

    American Birth Control League
    Margaret Sanger is famous for being a birth control activist, and a persistant one at that. She was the founder of the American Birth Contol League. The American Birth Control League is now known as Family Planning today. She felt that the diaphram was a more effective contraception. She felt so strong about women being protected that she smuggled them into the United States. She later opened a clinic in New York that resulted into her being in jail for 30 days.
  • Tutankhamun's Tomb

    Tutankhamun's Tomb
    Howard Carter has inspired many people on his findings on King Tut's tomb. Over the past years explorers stated that there was nothing to find in the Valley of the Kings. Howard Carter and his companion Lord Caravan spent tremendous amounts of money on finding something that they were not sure was there. After thirty-one years, Carter eventually found Tutankhamun's tomb. This tomb laid undisturbed for 3,000 years!
  • First movie made with sound

    First movie made with sound
    Lee de Forest invented phonofilm, which is a movie made with sound. The music was made at the edge of the film. The movie showed a man and a woman dancing to music, however their was no dialogue included. Movies with dialogue would not premire until several years later. In this decade, any sound from movies came from live actors and musicians. This was a big hit for people of this era.
  • President Harding's death

    President Harding's death
    During the year 1923 Presdient Harding was aware of many scandals linked to him. Him and his wife decided to take a trip to Alaska to try and escape their worries. On their way back in July, the president was not feeling well and suffered an attack from food poisoning. Days later the president died in the city of San Fransisco. Many people believed Harding poisoned himself to get away from all of his troubles. After his death, the vice president Calvin Coolidge came into office.
  • Immigration Act

    Immigration Act
    Many immigrants from various countries saw the United States as a place for a new life and job opportunites. President Harding passed a law in 1921 limiting the amount of immigrants allowed to enter the United States. A more thorough law was signed by the new president, Calvin Coolidge. The quota for immigrants entering was set at 2% of the total at any nation's residents in America. College students, ministers, and professors were exempt from this quota.
  • The first Winter Olympics

    The first Winter Olympics
    This date was when the first Olympic Games were held. It was located in the French Apps in Chamonix, France. The were sixteen different nations that sent athletes to participate in this extradonary event. The United States even participated and won four medals.
  • John T. Scopes Arrested

    John T. Scopes  Arrested
    John T. Scopes was a biology teacher in Tennesse who was arrested for teaching the evolution theory. The ACLU decided to defend Scopes, without a fee. William Jennings Bryan was Scopes opponet ,and was a District Attorney who belived strongly in the bible. Scopes Lawyer, Darrow, did an amazing job while cross-examining. He exposed to the public that Darrow didn't know what he was talking about.
  • The Jazz Singer

    The Jazz Singer
    The Jazz Singer was the first movie that was made with dialogue. It was produced by the Warner Brothers and the leading star was named Al Jolson. The movie was about a young man who breaks free from his Jewish tradition to sing Jazz in a beer hall. His father punishes him and this results in him leaving his home. This man later calls himself Jack Robin and becomes a famous Jazz Singer. Like any movie, he was hardships to over come.
  • Amelia Earhart

    Amelia Earhart
    Woman in this decade have been successful. It goes to show how well you can acheive something if you put your mind to it. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. However, Amelia Earhart vanashesd without a trace ,in thin air... without a parachute, Many people believed she ran out of fule flying over the Himalayas, yet there is not physical proof. She has also wrote best selling books about her flying experiences.
  • The St. Valentine's Day Massacre

    The St. Valentine's Day Massacre
    Capone was famous for running illegal speakeasies. He is also known as one of the biggest gangsters of the time period. On Valentine's day Capone had one of his henchman convince some of Moran's men, another popular gang leader, to purchase some illegal whiskey from a garage on 2122 North Clark Street. The killers dressed as poilce officers and lined several men against a wall and shot them with machine guns. The murders were never caught.
  • The Stock Market

    The 1920's was a decade of change. One of these changes include many individuals wanting to invest their money in top coperations. They did this knowing that in return if their company makes a profit they too would earn cash. Throughout the decade the stock's value increased, and American's were living the good life.
