    Proclamation of 1763
    After the end of the Seven Years’ War it prohibited any settler to settle past the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    An agreement after Britain’s victory over France and Spain the Seven Years’ War. Signed by Great Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Britain created this tax on sugar to pay its debts from the Seven Year’s War.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Imposed a direct tax on the colonists by taxing legal documents, magazines, and newspapers.
  • Quartering Acts

    Quartering Acts
    British were to be housed by anyone and everyone. They also had to pay for food and supplies for the troops living with them.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    British soldiers kill five civilian men and injure six more. They were defended in court by John Adams.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Due to a massive surplus of tea owned by the British East India Company, Britain only allowed the colonies drink this tea. Was also supposed to stop tea smuggling in the colonies.

    Boston Tea Party
    Demonstrators dressed as Native Americans and destroy an entire shipment of tea by throwing it into the bay. This became a key role in the American Revolution.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Was to punish Boston citizens for the actions in the Boston Tea Party. This closed the port of Boston, required colonists to house British soldiers, and citizens were not allowed to have councils and assembles.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    Delegates met to consider options such as a boycott of British goods, rights and grievances.
    Among the 56 appointed members, John Adams, Patrick Henry, George Washington and Samuel Adams had key roles.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Battles of Lexington and Concord
    These battles became the first engagements of the revolutionary war. British soldiers were to capture militia supplies. Militia men were notified weeks ahead of time by spying and the supplies were saved.

    They voted to form a Continental Army and supply them with munitions. Appointed George Washington to the commander of the army. They also extended the Olive Branch Petition but by then it was no good.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    British troops landed on the Charlestown peninsula and advance towards Bunker Hill. Militia holds their fire till the British are within 40 yards of their positions. This caused British to retreat twice but the militia’s ammunition is running low so they are forced to retreat.

    Thomas Paine publishes “Common Sense” pamphlet arguing in favor of independence for the colonies.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    A five-man committee including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin was tasked with drafting a formal statement of the colonies' intentions. It was largely written by Thomas Jefferson and was adopted on July 4, 1776.

    Battle of Long Island (Battle of Brooklyn)
    British land a large army to capture New York City. This was to divide the colonists in half. Washington retreats over to Manhattan by boat saving hundreds of his army from being captured.

    Was to boost morale of the dispirited soldiers from their losing streak. It gave soldiers hope and Washington won two much needed battles.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    Washington decides on a surprise attack on the Hessian troops at 8: am. The Continental Army surrounds and captures a thousand German soldiers. This victory added a morale boost and more man enlisted because of this.
  • Battles of Saratoga

    Battles of Saratoga
    The British surrender 5,000 men in the defeat of the Battles of Saratoga. In the first battle, the British fail to break through the American lines and retreat. The second battle, a British reconnaissance force was repulsed by an American force.

    Winter at Valley Forge
    Washington chose a site on the west bank of the Schuylkill River that could be effectively defended in the event of a British attack. Hundreds die from disease and starvation but the Patriots are held together by their loyalty to the cause and Washington.

    Battle of Yorktown
    George Washington, commanding a force of 17,000 French and Continental troops, begins the siege known as the Battle of Yorktown against Lord Charles Cornwallis with 9,000 British troops at Yorktown, Virginia. It became one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War.
