November 3Sputnik 2, carrying a dog, was launched by the USSR. It
remained in orbit until April 13, 1958. 1957 the first dog went to go to the moon. -
Explorer 1, the first U.S. satellite in orbit, was launched into
space. It discovered the Earth’s radiation belt. -
Vanguard 1 satellite was launched into orbit. Although
communication with it was lost in 1964, it remains the oldest
human made satellite still in orbit. -
NASA was founded.

1961 -Yuri Gagarin from the USSR becomes the first man in space on April 12. He was the first human to orbit the earth and see our planet from outer space.

1962 - John Glenn, first American in orbit. He was the fifth man in space and circled the Earth 3 times in a flight lasting nearly 5 hours.

L. Gordon Cooper spends 34 hours in space. He is the last American to fly in space alone.
