    President Bush sends 180,000 US Troops
    The Iraqi military was threatening the Saudi Arabian borders, so the US stepped in to help defend Saudi Arabia. The Iraqi Military invaded Kuwait first, then they moved to try to invade Saudia Arabia as well, and they succeeded. This threatened the US because this invasion gave Iraq control over a large portion of the world's oil supply. This invasion caused President Bush to send 180,000 US troops to help protect Saudi Arabia.

  • Bush doubled size of American forces in Iraq

    In November of 1990, President Bush added more US soldiers to the war. This showed that the US was willing to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait with force. Congress and the United Nations gave President Bush permission to wage war if Iraq did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15th 1991. This was a turning point because if the US wouldn't have done this, Iraq would have taken control of the oil.

    The beginning of this was operation desert storm which was an extremely successful period during the war for the allied coalition. It was a few weeks of mainly airstrike attacks led by the US.

    President Bush announced the War on Iraq on January 16th , 1991. In his speech, he explained that they have tried everything in their power to remove Iraq from Kuwait without using force. The war was a last resort, but it was the only option at that point.

    This war occured after Vietnam, and one major change from the Vietnam War to this war is that the US military was now all volunteer.

    President Bush ordered Saddam Hussein to step down from power and leave Iraq, or there would be war. When Hussein refused, President Bush declared war and thus began the Iraq War. The cartoon shows that the war was easy and successful for the US (and allies). The war lasted less than a year.

    This was an attack made by the Iraqi army on the US ground troops. It lasted less than 48 hours and was one of the costliest battles since Vietnam.
