    Cicones
    At Cicones Odysseus and his men raided a Thracian tribe after leaving Troy. Odysseus and his men had taken Ismara by suprise and had slayed most of the Ciconian women. About 78 of Odyseus' men were lost.

    The Lotus Eaters
    When Odysseus had landed on the island of the Lotus Eaters, his men were tempted to eat the lotus flower. Whoever had eaten this vile plant were to stay there forever, forgetting their homeland. Odysseus had to drag the three men back to the ship and tie them down.

    The Cyclops
    At this point in the Odyssey, Odysseus and his men had encountered the Cyclops named Polyphemus, Poseidon's one-eyed monster son. Odysseus would have to use his bravery and wisdom to escape from this beast. Once Odysseus had gotten the cyclops drunk, he and his men had rammed an olive tree log straight through the monster's eye.

    Aeolus, the god who lived on this island, was the keeper of the winds. Odysseus had stayed with this god for one month, sharing stories about the Battle of Troy. When it came time for Odysseus to leave, Aeolus had blown a great wind to help Odysseus home.

    The Laestrygonians were giant man-eating monsters whom destroyed 11 of Odysseus' 12 ships. They had thrown large boulders off of high cliffs when Odysseus and his men fled the island.

    Circe was a queen goddess who had turned Odysseus' men into swine. With a meal of cheese, barley, amber honey, and her own secret ingredient, she had planned to make them forget about their fatherland.

    At the land of the dead, Odysseus spoke to the blind prophet from the city of Thebes, Teiresias. Teiresias had given Odysseus advice on his voyage.

    The second time Odysseus had visited Circe, she had given him important insight on the two monsters, Charybdis and Scylla. She had told Odysseus to visit Scylla because it was better to lose six men than to lose all your men and your boat too.

    The Sirens were three women with wings who had sang so beautifully that they would attract anybody who had heard them into certain death. Odysseus had plugged his men's ears bees wax kneaded soft and ordered them to tie him to the mast of the ship, just so he could listen to them and live to tell the tale.

    Scylla was a large monster who had long tentacles and six serpent heads, which would take down one man for each. Odysseus was wise and listened to Circe, he had lost six men.
