    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.

  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise became a law near the end of September. It was believed it was going to save the Union from falling apart. This compromise was made to settle the dispute between slave and free states.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act was suggested by Stephen A. Douglas. His idea was to split Nebraska into two different territories, Nebraska and Kansas. Also, the people living in this territories voted on whether or not they wanted to allow slavery there.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Antislavery and proslavery forces fighting over territorial legislature in Kansas was the cause of "Bleeding Kansas". Antislavery settlers are attacked when the boycott the official government. Kansas became the official battle ground of the "Bleeding Kansas".
  • Caning of Sumner

    Charles Sumner, senator of Massachusetts, was attacked for his insulting speech by Preston Brooks. Many Southerners found Sumner's speech very insulting. In Brooks case, he was defending the South when he attacked. Southerners defended Brooks while the Northerners were still shocked at the events.
  • Dred Scott V. Sandford

    Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri until his owner took him to live in an area where slavery was not allowed. They did end up moving back to Missouri. Scott sued for his freedom and said that he was a free man because he had lived in those areas. Since Dred Scott was not a citizen, he couldn't sue and was denied of his freedom.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. In order to do so, he planned to take weapons in the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He took a few people with him and along the way he had killed 4 people. Seven people all together were captured and Brown was sentenced to death.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    This election ended up turning out like there were two different races going on (South and North). The two canidate running mainly for the North was Lincoln and Douglas. The two running for Southern votes were Breckinridge and Bell. The election ended up being between Lincoln and Breckinridge. Lincoln ended up winning the election because the North had more people than the South.
