Rainsford and his companion take a boat from a port somewhere in Europe and chat about an island the local sailors call 'ship-trap' island.

Rains fords companion walks off into the boat and Rainsford stay on top to look at the beauty of the island and ocean and because of that he falls into the water and is forced to swim to the island

after waking up on ship trap island due to falling off the boat he is trapped on the island all alone to his knowledge. Rainsford looks around the island and finds human life through seeing a large mansion on the island. after approaching he knock on the door and is greeted by a gun to his face by a occupant who is very large and muscularly and has almost pitch black eyes.

after Rainsford finds out he goes to bed and try's to fall asleep after finding out that he will be hunted next.

the man with the gun does a salute to the person that comes by and states that his name is general Zaroff and welcomes Rainsford inside and they chat about how they are both hunters and tell many stories.

General Zaroff states that hunting started to bore but then he found new game and that he has them transported to this island and Rainsford inquires that he must know the big game and he states it as humans of all races.

General Zaroff comes home at noon and says that the black that he hunted last night was bad and that boredom was coming back and then Rainsford is handed a nice knife and some food and water. Rainsford runs and makes a difficult trail to follow like a fox and Zaroff has given him 3 hours head start. Rainsford then becomes like a cat and runs up and hides in a tree, few hours later Zaroff comes and almost catches him but then walks off finishing the day.

Rainsford make a Burmese tiger pit trap and only catches Zaroffs best dog. later Rainsford is napping in a tree and then Zaroff and his dog pack as well as his lackey Ivan. he makes a trap that he learned in Uganda and manages to kill Ivan but then has to escape and jumps into the ocean and Zaroff thinks he dead.

Rainsford makes a trap known as a Malayan man trap that only half works and hurts zaroffs shoulder.

Zaroff makes his way to his mansion annoyed about having to replace Ivan and having not being able to kill Rainsford. Zaroff then makes his way to bed at around 10 at night and then Rainsford jumps out of the curtains and declares that Zaroff now must play the mouse in the cat and mouse game, and then Rainsford declares that Zaroffs bed is the most comfortable he has ever slept in.
