    Vincent Van Gogh, was born in Zundert, Holland. He was the eldest of seven children in his family, the son of a pastor, Theodore van Gogh. Vincent was given the name of his grandfather, which was also given to the firstborn child of the family, who died when it was still an infant.

    In 1880, Vincent van Gogh followed his brother
    Theo’s suggestion and took up painting in
    earnest. For a brief period Vincent took painting
    lessons from Anton Mauve in Hague. Remarkable is the way he played with the light and the looseness of his brush strokes. The use of his colors, which favour the dark tones, set him apart from his teacher.

    In the spring of 1886 he visited Paris where he lived with his brother, in the Montmartre area, the center of artistic activity. There he came in contact with the Impressionists Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. It is significantly influenced by the Impressionist movement and especially in the use of color.

    Two years later, in 1888, van Gogh left the French capital and visited southern France and the Provence region. There, he is inspired by the landscape as well as the rural life of the inhabitants, things which he tries to attribute to his painting. During this period, he invented a special technique of whirling with the brush.

    During his stay in Arles, he also receives the visit of the painter Gauguin. However, after a few months, they strongly disagree and due to his unstable mental health, van Gogh cuts part of his left ear and ends up in the local hospital. There are allegations that van Gogh had threatened to kill Gauguin and cut off his ear in search of some kind of purification from his remorse.

    In 1889 he was admitted to the psychiatric center of the monastery of St. Paul in Saint Remy, where he remained for about a year suffering from depression. During his stay there, he continues to paint works of art.

    In May 1890 he left the psychiatric clinic and lived for a time in an area near Paris, where he was monitored by Dr. Paul Gasset. While Vincent is being medically monitored, he makes a single work of art, which is a portrait of Gachet.

    In July 1890, van Gogh developed symptoms of major depression.

    Vincent shot himself in the chest on July 27 and died two days later.
