The major event that occurred in the United States was the American Civil War that started with the battle of Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay. Connects to Doyle in a sense, because he wrote on other wars that influenced him as well. It was a battle fought for both political and social rights, as it was for slavery and government control mainly. The Civil War was the bloodiest battle in American history with a death toll of 620,000 American deaths. 1 in 4 soldiers died. -

The Suez Canal is located in Egypt and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. It cost $100 million dollars to open up and be able to use. The war that involved Prussia trying to unite with Germany. The war was led by Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck was the chancellor of the North German Confederation, and attempted to unite Germany by having wars with France. Exact date unknown. The Second Anglo-Afghan War was fought with Britain and Afghanistan as means to relieve Russian influence from Afghanistan. When the Russians sent an envoy to Afghanistan, Britain immediately wanted to make a diplomatic mission with Afghansitan. The Afghans refused and as a result Britain launched war. The First Great Boer War
The Great Boer War is a time in which Britain fought with Africa. It was more of a civil war than world war, because it was mainly fought in Africa over who had more power there, the British or the Africans. There was more than one Boer War and Sir Arthur was involved in the second one that began October 11, 1899 by being a medical doctor for the British deployed in South Africa. World and personal event in a sense to Doyle. AP element is political and social as the war was fought for land. -
Doyle becomes a Spiritualist
Exact date unknown. Doyle decides to believe in Spitualism and show appreciation to the past and ancestors as well. With his belief in Spiritualism, it influenced Doyle to write books based on it such as the New Revelation and Speckled Band. It can also be seen in many of his works including the Sherlock Holmes series. AP element is religion. -

The revival of the Olympic Games that began on April 6, 1896 and went up to April 15, 1896. The Olympics consist of athletes coming from around the world to compete in sporting events such as cycling, swimming, shooting, fencing and wrestling. For his services to Britain during the Great Boer War, Doyle became knighted by King Edward VII and received the surname Sir as a reward. He was also put on the Honours List by the King for the encouragement to write even more stories. -

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored people was found in Springfield, Illinois. It was used to create social equality and stimulate the society. The first major war where countries from all around the world fought against each other. World War I involved extensive weaponry, military tactics such as trench warfare, and air warfare. Doyle was diagnosed with Angina Pectoris which involves chest pain and problems with blood flow to the heart. Despite being diagnosed with the disease, Doyle went on his last tour to Holland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. It was the disease that would make him basically immobile until death. -

The Great Depression started with Black Tuesday and the stock market crash in the United States of America. It was time when people were trying to sell their products, but yet could not sell them.
