Nero takes his familiar name when he is adopted by his great-uncle Claudius after his mother Aggripina marries him. He becomes Claudius' heir and successor.

When Nero turns 16, he marries Claudia Octavia, Claudius' daughter, which helps to cement his place as a firm figure in the political structure of Rome.

Nero kills his mother with this understood to be because of their conflict surrounding Nero's affair with Poppaea Sabina. According to Suetonius, Nero organised the ship she was travelling in to sink, and after she swam to shore, she was executed and her death reported as a suicide.
