    Charles Booth did not belive the accuracy of the reports that were done by the goverment. He decided to reseach himself the conditions of the poor in London, he was astponished on what he found. He discovered that 30 percent of London's population lived below the poverty line.

    Seebohm Rowntree's book about the poor
    Rowntree published a book called: A Study of Town Life, it was based on 2 years of research in his home town of York. It contained a huge amount of satistical evidence on wages, hours of work, diet, health and housing. This had a particulary powerful impact and informed the counrty about the extent of poverty.
  • Galt raises awarness about the poor in the East End of London

    Galt was a missionary dedicated to helping the poor of London. He took photos to show the hardhsips of the poor to raise awareness.
  • Liberal party victory

    The Liberal party won a huge victory in the general election in Britain. They decided toi embark on an almost impossibe project, to improve the socail reform in Britian with regards to poverty
  • David Loyd Gerorge

    He becomes chancellor of the exchequer. He thought it was morally wrong this poverty existed and set his sights on eradicting this problem

    Under Lloyd George his first buget was to create an old age pension scheme. If soemone over 70 had no income then they were give five shillings a week.
  • Unemployment

    Labour echanges set up by volunteers had been running for a some time. This is were someone could find avialble work everyday. In 1909 the goverment set up its own labour exchanges as part of its campaign against unemployment
  • The National Insurance Act

    This was a really important measure in getting rid of poverty. Llyd George went further then anyone before and set up insurance for Sick Pay and Unempleyment benefits
