  • Taliban Government recognized

    Pakistan recognizes the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. The Taliban at the time controlled about two-thirds of Afghanistan. Then Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates follow Pakistans decision and recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan's government.
  • Taliban Massacre

    The Taliban kill about 2,000 Hazara people (the ethnic minority in Afghanistan), and kill seven Irainian diplomats. Also, Al-Queda terrorists bomb a U.S. embassy in Kenya, and Tanzania. In response, Bill Clinton attacks a suspected terrorist compound with cruise missiles, and Bin-Laden is blamed for what has happened.
  • Assasination of Ahmad Shah Massoud

    On this day in Takhar Province, Afghanistan two suspected Al-Queda members dressed up as TV crew, and assasinated Ahmad Shah Massoud. Ahmad Shah Massoud was an Afghanistan political and military leader who was in command during the Soviet occupation, and the civil wars that followed.
  • 911

    This days marks one of the saddest days in U.S. history. Al-Queda terrorists hijacked four commercial airline planes and crashed two of them into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field in Pennsylvania. This terrorist attack killed nearly 3,000 people and many more were wounded. George W. Bush blames Al- Queda for the deadliest attack on American territory in history.
  • Operation Enduring Freedom

    On October 7th, 2001, U.S, and British forces teamed up and invaded Afghanistan in an operation called Operation Enduring Freedom because the Taliban refused to hand over Bin-Laden, and stop all the madness. The military coalition (group of countries fighting for the same purpose) expands to Turkey, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, France, and a few other countries.
  • Capturing Kabul

    On this day the military coalition use air strikes and ground attacks to allow the Northern Alliance to seize control of Kabul, which topples the Taliban regime. Kabul is where the author of "The Kite Runner" Khaled Hosseini was born and raised, but he was not living in Kabul at the time of this attack.
  • Taliban and Al-Queda retreat

    The Northern Alliance sieze control of Kandahar, and the providence of Zabul two days later. This forces the Taliban and Al-Queda members to retreat to the Tora Bora Mountain range and eventually into Pakistan. This is a mini victory for the Northern Alliance and Afghanistan because the Taliban and Al-Queda are leaving. Bin Laden's whereabouts are still unknown.
  • Operation Anaconda

    Operation Anaconda was the name for the operation led by the U.S. to trap Al-Queda members in the Shah-i-Kot valley where they were going to pick off Al-Queda and Taliban members and root out their holdouts. It was called Operation Anaconda because like a snake the Americans wanted to trap their prey in a coil.
  • War in Afghanistan is over

    On this date the U.S. declares that major combat operations in Afghanistan are over and there should be no more violence. The U.S. Defense Secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld met with Afghanistan's president, Hamid Karzai in a conference to discuss the end of this major war and wrap it all up.
  • Hamid Karzai

    On this date Hamid Karzai was elected as head of state of Afghanistan by the grand jury. This is a major step for Afghanistan because they have officially gotten rid of the Taliban who use to have most of the control over Afganistan, and the Taliban were very controlling and harsh toward the minorities in Afghanistan.
  • NATO brings peace

    This is the the first time that NATO has had a mission beyond Europe's bordiers. NATO hopes to brings peace to the people of Afghanistan and try to help those in need. It will be a very hard task to accomplish but NATO is hopeful and hopes to get Afghanistan and its people back to the way it used to be before the war started.
