    Thai attacks Angkor

    Siam (Thais) invade Angkor and as they are too powerful, Angkor is abandoned.

    End of Khmer era

    The classic Khmer era comes to an end after 525 years, the last stone engravings take place.
  • Period: 1243 BCE to 1298 BCE

    Rule of Jayavarman VIII

    Jayavarman VIII becomes next king and renounces Buddhism and orders that everything to do with Buddhism is destroyed.
  • Period: 1181 BCE to 1219 BCE

    Jayavarman VII defeats Chams and expands empire

    Jayavarman VII, after becoming king, defeats Chams and decides to build up the Khmer Empire even more.
  • Period: 1177 BCE to 1178 BCE

    Cham kingdom invades Khmer Empire's eastern territory

    Another war starts, but with a different empire, the Chams who want what Khmer have.
  • 1113 BCE

    Suryavarman II crowned king, rules until 1150, designs Angkor Wat

    Suryavarman named king after killing his uncle to get there. He designs all of Angkor Wat.
  • 1002 BCE

    Khmer civil war between Jayaveera Varman and Suryavarman I

    Tension grew between these two over who became king, causing a civil war where eventually, Suryavarman I wins.
  • Period: 834 BCE to 1145 BCE

    Khmer Empire expands

    At around this time, Khmer expand enough for them to build Angkor Wat. And at this point, Buddhism had become very important.
  • 802 BCE

    Khmer Empire begins

    The Khmer Empire rose in 802 CE and Jayavarman was the Khmer’s first God-king, which they call ‘Devaraja’.
  • 500 BCE

    Trade between Khmer and Indian people

    There is evidence of use of iron to make tools dating back to this time, and there is also evidence of well-formed trading systems.
