Mansa Musa became emperor of the West African emperor of Mali. He became emperor after his journey to Mecca. Mansa Musa felt like he needed to change some things about Mali. The Malian Empire consisted of territory formerly belonged to the Ghana Empire in present day surrounding areas.

In 1324, Mansa Musa began his pilgrimage to Mecca. He was accompanied by thousands of well dressed supporters and servants. He saw many of the poor people while he was on his hajj, so he made great donations to them. He arrived to the Mecca and began praying to the Mecca ad leaves to return to his home. His pilgrimage bought attention to his city.

Because Musa took his pilgrimage to Mecca and brought a lot of gold, a lot of people had gold. Therefor, the value of gold was dropped.

Mansa Musa appeared on maps in the year 1329 because of Musa's pilgrimage. They were very proud of their establishment. Before Mansa Musa's death, the city Mali appeared on many maps.
