The Hunger Games: Help From Many Sources

  • Peeta Gives Bread to Katniss

Peeta purposely burns a loaf of bread to give to Katniss. She is starving, but he knows that his mother won't approve if he just gives it to her, so he burns it and pretends to throw it away. You know that he wants to help Katniss overcome her starviation because he even went to lengths to cover it up.
  • Gale Restrains Prim at the Reaping

When Katniss volunteered to replace Prim as a tribute in the Hunger Games, Prim tried to stop her. Gale, knowing how upset Katniss would be if Prim had to compete, held her back. He knew that by doing this he gave up almost all chances of Katniss ever coming home again, but he did it anyways because he knew that it was what Katniss wanted.
  • Peeta's Father Makes a Promise

When Peeta’s father told Katniss at the train station that he would take care of Prim and her mother, he helped her to stop worrying, and to focus on the task at hand. It could have been catastrophic if she went into the arena, preoccupied with worries about her mother and sister.
  • Cinna Creates "The Girl on Fire"

For the opening ceremonies, Cinna transformed Katniss into “The Girl on Fire”, making her look strong and breathtaking. This helped her to stand out among the other tributes. This also got the attention of many sponsors who may have been responsible for sending the bread or the burn medicine.
  • Peeta Makes Katniss Seem Desirable

When Katniss gave her interview with Caesar Flickerman, she may have gotten a few sponsors, but it was Peeta who really made her look good. He made her “desirable” and the citizens of the Capitol wanted to help her. He gave her a better chance at survival by telling the audience about the qualities that she was unable to show them in her interview.
  • Rue Points Out the Tracker Jackers

While hiding out in the tree above the Career pack Katniss had her first encounter with Rue, when she pointed out the hive of highly poisonous Tracker Jackers dangling above Katniss’s head. Since Katniss was one of Rue’s competitors, the easy thing to do would have been to just leave her sitting there to die. Instead, Rue warned Katniss about them and gave her the weapon that she used to weaken the Careers.
  • Rue Treats Katniss's Stings

After Katniss and Rue teamed up, Rue offered her knowledge of Tracker Jacker venom to help Katniss recover. She taught Katniss to chew on those specific leaves, which made Katniss feel a lot better. She even used that treatment on Peeta’s leg later.
  • Seneca Crane Changes the Rules

Seneca Crane, being a romantic, wanted to see Katniss and Peeta live happily ever after. This led him to change the rules of the Hunger Games so that they could both live. There were no other pairs like them from the other districts, so it was obvious that the rule change was directed at them.
  • Thresh Saves Katniss

After the “feast” when Katniss procured the backpack with medicine for Peeta in it, Clove was very close to killing Katniss, but luckily Thresh was there to save her. He didn’t save her because he wanted to be allies, but because she had been allies with Rue, his district partner. Whatever his reasons, he saved Katniss’s life.
  • Haymitch Gives Advice

After getting out of the arena, Katniss is oblivious to the situation she has caused, so Haymitch, thinking of her safety, informs her of all the danger she is in and tells her what she needs to do to try to calm the waters a little. If Haymitch hadn’t told her to act in love with Peeta, then Katniss might have blown it for both of them.
