    The Star-Spangled Banner, by Francis Scott Key, is approved by President Hoover and Congress as the national anthem. The lyrics of the anthem were written during the bombing of McHenry by British ships at a harbor in Baltimore in 1814.

    Construction is completed on the Empire State Building in New York City and it is open for business. The Empire State Building is 1,454 feet high (including the antennae) but the roof height is 1,250 feet. Its nickname comes from the nickname of New York, the Empire State.

    FDR wins the 1932 Presidential election by the largest margin of any candidate since Ulysses S. Grant, to become the new President of the United States of America. President Roosevelt establishes the New Deal, a response to the Great Depression.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt overwhelms his Republican challenger, Alfred Landon, for a second presidential term. Franklin D. Roosevelt had 62% of the popular vote which insured Roosevelt with his New Deal plan. The New Deal plan was the economic measures introduced by Franklin D. Roosevelt to counteract the effects of the Great Depression.

    Golden Gate Bridge
    The Golden Gate Bridge opens to pedestrian traffic and the day after President Roosevelt gives the green light from Washington D.C. for vehicles to begin to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. It created a vital link between San Francisco and Marin County.

    Albert Einstein alerts Franklin D. Roosevelt to an A-bomb opportunity, this lead to the creation of the Manhattan project. Albert Einstein arrived as a fugitive from Nazi Germany six years before this on October 17, 1933.

    Nazi Germany invades Poland and the United States declares its neutrality in the European war. This effectively begins World War II after a year of Europe attempting to appease Hitler and his Nazi Party’s aims.
