    The German Tribes
    Three germanic tribes invaded Britain. The three tribes has similar languages that developed into what we know as Old English.
    The words be, strong, and water all originate from the Germanic tribes invading Britian.

    Invasion of the Vickings

    The invasion of the vickings brought Norse words to the english language (mostly in the north).

    The Norman Invasion

    When the Normans invaded England they brought some kind of French with them. This eventually caused a language division where the higher classes spoke French and the lower classes still spoke English.

    The Dominate Language

    English became the dominate language in England but with many French words added due to the Normans.

    The Black Death

    This plauge killed around one third of the English population. This is the main cause of the two languages (English and French) to mix. This is because the Black Death made the lower classes, such as laboring and merchant classes, to grow in economic and social importance.

    Linguistic Division is Over

    The linguistic division is over and Middle English was finalized. The Statute of Pleading was adopted which made Middle English the language of the courts and was used in parliment.

    The printing press brought stablization to English. The dialect of London became a standard.

    This resulted in a distinct American variety of English.
  • The Renaissance

    The renaissance opened the window for many new words and phrases into the English language. Examples would be "one fell swoop," critical, and dwindle.

    Spelling in English was fixed and the first dictionary was published.

  • The American Revolution (Industrial Revolution)

    The Industrial Revolution (lasting from 1760-1820) and technology caused the English language to grow.
    Some words that came out of it were oxygen, nuclear, and airplaine.
